Why Most AI Story Generators Failed

When I launched the first version of Wanderly a little over 2 years ago, many people were trying to create custom, AI-generated stories. I think many people thought storybooks were "easy" and were trying to make a quick buck. Most of them are gone now.

The thing is: Storybooks are magical. They speak to who we are, and who we might want to be. They set the foundation for literacy and learning (something I think about a lot as the Board Co-Chair of the Oakland Literacy Coalition).

The Problem with Google's Gemini Storybook

So when Google launched Gemini Storybook a couple of weeks ago, I was at first curious, then a little anxious, and then a bit offended when I saw what they put out. I've seen this playbook a few times before.

I wrote up some more pointed thoughts about Gemini Storybook in my build-in-public blog, but let's just say, as a former Googler and having been in this space for a couple of years, I don't think it's good, and I doubt they're committed to it. I suspect the landing page will be gone in a year or two.

Wanderly is different. Wanderly is built from the heart, and I am passionate about making sure your Wanderly stories aren't just another mid story built by a bot, but that they're something magical and new that only the latest in technology + a human's spirit can offer.
